Why upcycling can be more effective then recycling
Most of food packaging uses plastic these days. Things
were looking better after long struggles of environmentalists and packaging
companies were starting to use sustainable materials, until Covid-19 pandemic
showed up and ruined everything. Yes, it is true that during the pandemic, we
need impermeable materials for food packaging boxes, but this has led to spread
of plastic waste to such as large extent, that it has sped up the deterioration
of planet.
Packaging serves four basic functions:
- Protection
- Preservation
- Promotion
- Convenience
Now, these four functions can be fulfilled by using
sustainable materials. Covid-19 can be avoided by practicing good hygiene and
staying careful. But humans had to do things in the worst way possible.
Packaging companies used this pandemic as an edge to justify their disastrous
business practices. They added so much plastic to the environment that there is
now an island of plastic waste (size of Texas) in the Pacific Ocean.
Sustainable packaging:
Using a corrugated or Kraft box can serve the same
purpose but humans insist on using plastic just because they find it convenient
to use.
The reason plastic feels more convenient to use is not
that it is a better material. The problem lies in packaging design. Plastic
containers are designed to be more handy and easy to carry. Corrugated food
packaging boxes can be made more suited to consumer needs just by improving the
design. Size, shape, dimensions, and handles are four factors that determine the efficiency and usability of packaging design.
Smart designs:
Food and beverage companies don’t invest in R7D for smart
packaging designs because we as consumers are okay with them using plastic
containers for their products. Consumers are known to cancel cosmetic brands
that don’t use sustainable packaging, still when it comes to THE most
prevailing products in our life (food) we fail to acknowledge the need for
action.
If the food and beverage industry starts investing in researching
smart and innovative solutions to design custom food boxes made up of
sustainable materials, 70% of our plastic waste problems will be resolved.
Upcycling:
Sustainable packaging doesn’t necessarily mean you have
to use biodegradable or compostable materials. Glass, steel or aluminum
containers can be used instead of plastic. You don’t necessarily have to throw
these containers, in fact, you can easily upcycle or reuse them.
Recycling is failing us, it’s a sham, it has been decades since recycling was introduced and it hasn’t made things any better. The world is still a huge ball of trash, so maybe it’s time to try a new solution.
Instead of focusing on recycling, maybe we should shift
the focus to upcycling and see where it takes us.
Conclusion:
If you’re looking for high-quality sustainable custom food packaging boxes for your business and need information about a reliable packaging firm, food packaging boxes is one of the best.
